If you’re looking for a new job, read our tips on writing an impactful CV below..
Your CV is your first opportunity to make a strong impression, so it’s crucial to get it right. As recruiters, we’ve reviewed countless CVs, and have noticed some themes:
Tailor your CV
Your CV shouldn’t be a “one-size-fits-all” document. Tailor it to the role you’re applying for by highlighting relevant experience and achievements.
Tip: Identify the key competencies needed from the job description and demonstrate how your skills align with the role.
Information on Transactions, Strategies or Portfolios
Be specific about the scale and complexity of your work – for example, have you worked on multi-jurisdictional value add strategies with multiple LP investors, etc…
Tip: If you are worried about confidentiality, stick to headline information such as deal value, asset class, location, type of investors involved
Highlight your Achievements
Employers want to know the impact you made in your previous roles.
Tip: Turn responsibilities into achievements. For example, instead of “Managed a team,” say, “Led a team of 5, achieving 20% increase in productivity.”
Information Overload
While it’s tempting to include everything you’ve ever done, a CV isn’t an autobiography. Hiring managers want to see the quantifiable highlights, not every detail.
Tip: Focus on key quantifiable achievements (e.g., “Managed £50M in transactions” or “Increased portfolio returns by 15%”).
Spelling and Grammar
It might seem obvious, but typos and grammatical errors can give the impression of carelessness.
Tip: Always proofread your CV – and then proofread it again. Better yet, ask someone else to review it.
